About Clutter Clearing...

Clutter Clearing has been helping clutterholics and hoarders around the world WITHOUT the need for a home visit since 2001.

Clutter Clearing was set up in 2001 by Clare Baker, a former clutterholic and borderline hoarder after she discovered HOW to clear your clutter without the need for anyone to come to your home to 'help' you.

Clare has clients and members in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Clare has been featured on BBC Breakfast TV, BBC South Today TV, on numerous BBC Radio stations, in Good Housekeeping, Harpers and Queen, Prima Magazine, Women and Home, The Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times, Saga Magazine, Housing Today and many more magazines and newspapers.

Through her online Clutter College, Clare provides all the knowledge, information and support you need to succeed with your Clutter Clearing without the need for an expensive home visit.

Clare can give you the weekly support you need to succeed either as part of a group or privately on a 1-2-1 basis, the knowledge you need to understand so you know WHY you struggle with your clutter through her workshops, and the experience of HOW to successfully clear your clutter with her short courses and LIVE classes.

If you are serious about becoming completely clutter free forever, Clare's part-time 7 Step Journey Course will takes you on the same 7 Step Journey that she discovered and started back in 2000 to successfully clear her own clutter.

If you're ready to stop struggling and start succeeding with your Clutter Clearing, then visit Clare's Help Centre to find out what help would suit you and your circumstances.

Your Journey Briefing

A calm, clear explanation of how the 7 Step Journey works - and how to choose th right level of support for you.

A Gentle Welcome

If you’re here, it’s because you want to understand how the 7 Step Journey works — and what kind of support might feel right for you.

This page gives you a calm, clear overview of the Journey, so you can make a grounded, confident decision at your own pace.

There’s no pressure.

Just clarity, understanding, and choice.

Why the Journey Works

Most people who arrive here have lived through the same cycle:

  • a burst of motivation
  • a big clear‑out
  • a temporary sense of relief
  • …followed by the clutter “growing back”

Not because you’re lazy.

Not because you’re disorganised.

But because clutter is emotional — and habits, beliefs, and patterns take time to change.

The Journey works because it doesn’t start with the stuff.

It starts with you — your patterns, your history, your overwhelm, your resistance, and the reasons clutter has been so hard for you.

It’s gentle.

It’s structured.

And it’s designed to help you feel safe, steady, and in control.

What Makes This Different

This isn't:

  • a blitz
  • a weekend makeover
  • or someone coming into your home to "fix" things for you

The Journey is a proven, step‑by‑step method created from lived experience — the exact process Clare used to clear her own clutter over 25 years ago.

It’s:

  • emotionally safe
  • predictable
  • designed for real life
  • built around small, steady steps
  • supportive without pressure
  • flexible enough for full‑time work, health challenges, or low energy

You simply watch the videos in order, follow the steps, and build confidence slowly and steadily.

The 7 Steps — A Simple Overview

Step 1 - Understanding

Find out why clutter has been so hard for you, why past attempts haven’t worked, and how to work with your brain instead of against it.

No letting go yet.

This step is about clarity, safety, and setting you up for gentle progress in Step 2.

Step 2 - Accumulation

You'll start getting in a routine that stops the clutter growing back.

You'll also begin gently letting go of the lighter, less emotionally triggering things (email, computer, and paperwork clutter) - a routine that continues throughout the rest of Journey.

Step 3 - Decision Making

As part of your regular routine, Step 3 focuses on learning the tools that help you make balanced, realistic decisions - preparing you to feel confident and ready to succeed in Step 4: Mount Everest.

Step 4 - Mount Everest

You’ll add a weekly big and bulky backlog clutter‑clearing session to your routine, working on your most visible clutter — starting in the smallest, least‑cluttered area or room so you can succeed and not get overwhelmed.

During Step 4, you’ll clear your two smallest, least-cluttered areas or rooms — one on the “climb” and one on the “descent” — giving you steady, achievable goals to focus on, and crucially, significant successes before you move on to Step 5.

Just like your routine email, computer, and paperwork sessions, you’ll continue your big and bulky backlog sessions for the rest of your Journey (saving the biggest, most cluttered area or room for Step 7).

Step 5 - Sentimental

Alongside your routine sessions, you'll discover how to honour the memories and emotions of your most meaningful belongings without drowning in emotion or guilt.

You'll learn the unique Clutter Clearing Method we use to make decisions about sentimental belongings, and how to make this a fun and creative element of the Journey - something you'll begin to build into your routine for the rest of your Journey.

Step 6 - Organisation

By this point, you'll have at least three clutter-free areas or rooms in your home, so now it's time to learn how to organise your home.

You'll work out how you need your home to be organised in a way that it works for you, and build systems and routines that support the progress you’ve already made - enabling you to live your vision of your clutter-free best life at the end of your Journey.

Step 7 - Control

On the final step, you'll bring your knowledge, experience and successes together to clear your final, biggest, most cluttered area or room - and ensure you have the habits you need stay clutter‑free forever beyond the Journey.

Then...

You Graduate.

How the Journey Works

The Journey is built around neuroscience and emotional safety.

You “do the doing” for:

  • up to 2 hours a day
  • 5 days a week
  • during Clutter Clearing Terms (5 consecutive weeks)

Why?

Because your brain can only make good decisions for about two hours before it becomes overwhelmed or reactive.

Consistency beats intensity.

Small steps beat big pushes.

Rest is part of the process.

The Journey follows a predictable term‑time routine, with regular rest periods — so you never burn out and you always know what’s coming next.

Typical Timelines

Everyone starts from a different place —

with different levels of clutter, different causes behind it, different levels of support, different life pressures, and different experiences of resistance or impatience.

The following timescales describe how long it typically takes people to complete their Journey, depending on the level of support they choose — the level of resistance and impatience they experience once they start, and their willingness to get extra support when they need it.

Private Journey Members

3 - 5 years

Group Journey Members

5 - 7 years

DIY Journey Members

7+ years

These timescales often surprise people — until they realise that the Journey is a long‑term, supported process.

With the routines inside the Journey, and any extra emotional support you choose outside it (including therapy), you move through it steadily — and crucially, in a one‑way direction.

Unlike the cycle of blitzes you’ve been stuck in, this approach means you never have to deal with your clutter in this way again.

It’s more like a part‑time course -

something you progress through step by step, with the right support at the right time.

Just as you might study a few hours a day over several years to gain a qualification, you’re learning new skills, new habits, and new emotional patterns that last a lifetime.

The difference in timescales isn’t about ability or effort.

It simply reflects how much support, structure, and accountability each path provides.

Is the Journey For You?

The Journey is likely a good fit if you:

  • want to clear your clutter — forever
  • feel overwhelmed, stuck, ashamed, or exhausted
  • want to break the cycle you’ve been trapped in — the one that hasn’t enabled you to clear your clutter
  • want a gentle, structured path
  • want to understand why clutter has been so hard for you
  • want to learn the skills and routines that keep you clutter‑free
  • prefer slow, steady progress
  • want support that feels emotionally safe
  • want a path that works even with full‑time work, health challenges, or low energy
  • want to follow the same path Clare used to successfully clear her own clutter forever.

If you’re nodding along to even a few of these, the Journey may feel like home.

How to Begin

There are three gentle ways to start.

Each one gives you a soft, safe way to explore whether the Journey feels right for you.

DIY Journey

For people who want to work independently — and who feel confident they can get their routine of consistently making time to ‘Do the Doing’ in place without external accountability.

Best for those who can protect their time boundaries on their own, stay consistent with the daily routines, and have appropriate support in place for when the learning on Step 1 becomes uncomfortable or challenging.

A good fit if you prefer to begin gently

Many people start with DIY for lots of understandable reasons — including believing it’s the most practical option, a sensible starting point, or a chance to get familiar with how the Journey works.

And when they notice they’re finding it harder to make progress on their own, they often choose to upgrade for the extra structure, support, resources and accountability.

Group Journey

For people who want structure, accountability, and community support — and who find it easier to protect their time boundaries when they have a regular appointment to ‘Do the Doing’.

Group members also have the option of a short weekly check‑in with me during Wednesday Surgery if they'd like any extra advice or guidance.

Private Journey

For people who want a dedicated space and time for personalised guidance and one‑to‑one support — with clear weekly goals to ensure steady progress, stronger accountability, and tailored advice.

It’s ideal if group session times don’t work for them, they work full‑time, or they need support protecting their time boundaries.

There’s no pressure.

No long-term commitment.

Just a gentle way to begin and see whether the Journey feels like home.
